How it goes together

The Pine Run roof system

A roof is six things working together, installed from the eave up. Cheap roofs skip two or three of them. Here is what we put on every house, in order.

1 2 3 4 5 6 Eave Ridge
Cutaway at the eave, layers peeled back toward the ridge. Not to scale.
  1. Roof deck 7/16" OSB or plank sheathing. Anything soft or delaminated gets cut out and replaced before a single shingle goes on.
  2. Ice & water shield Self-adhering membrane at the eaves, valleys, chimneys and every pipe penetration. This is what stops ice-dam backup in a Pennsylvania or Ohio February.
  3. Synthetic underlayment Runs the rest of the deck. Tear-resistant and it won't wrinkle the way felt paper does.
  4. Starter course A purpose-made starter strip with factory sealant at the eaves and rakes — the single biggest defense against wind uplift.
  5. Architectural shingles Laminated Class A fire-rated shingles, six nails per shingle in the nail zone, rated to 130 mph when installed this way.
  6. Ridge vent & cap Continuous ridge vent balanced against soffit intake, capped with matching hip-and-ridge shingles so the attic actually breathes.
What to expect

Four steps, no surprises

Step 01

Inspection

We get on the roof, photograph what we find, and check the attic for ventilation and moisture. Usually within 48 hours of your call.

Step 02

Written estimate

A line-item price with the exact materials named. Valid for 30 days. If decking needs replacing, the per-sheet price is on the quote up front.

Step 03

Install day

Material drops the morning of. Landscaping gets covered, the crew tears off and installs, and most homes are finished in a single day.

Step 04

Walkthrough

We sweep the property with rolling magnets, walk the job with you, and register your manufacturer warranty before we pull out.

Wind, hail & insurance

Storm damage claims

Western PA gets straight-line winds most springs and hail often enough to matter. Damage is rarely obvious from the ground — granule loss, bruised mats and lifted tabs all read as "fine" from the driveway and leak eighteen months later.

We inspect free, document it the way carriers expect, and meet your adjuster on the roof so nothing gets missed.

Request a Storm Inspection
Will filing a claim raise my rates?
Weather losses are generally treated differently from at-fault claims, but every carrier and policy is different — ask your agent before you file. We'll give you the inspection report either way, free, so you can decide with real information.
How long do I have to file after a storm?
Most Pennsylvania policies set a deadline measured in months from the date of loss, and some are as short as one year. If you know a storm date, don't sit on it — get the roof looked at.
Do you handle the paperwork?
We provide the photo documentation, the scope of work and the itemized estimate, and we're on site when the adjuster comes out. You file the claim and we supply everything your carrier asks for.
What if the claim is denied?
You still have our inspection report and an honest estimate. If the roof needs work, we'll quote it as a straightforward replacement and can walk you through financing options.
From our customers

What neighbors say

Crew showed up at seven, had the old roof off by ten and were sweeping the yard by four. Two months and a lot of rain later, not a drop. The estimate is exactly what we paid.

Dan & Marie K.
Gibsonia

After the June windstorm two other companies wouldn't return calls. Pine Run was out the next morning, tarped the open section and sat with our adjuster. Handled it start to finish.

Steve R.
Wexford

They found three sheets of rotten decking over the garage and showed me the photos before replacing them. Charged what the quote said a sheet would cost. That kind of thing is why I've already recommended them twice.

About the company

A woman-owned
roofing company

Pine Run Roofing is owned and run by Melissa A. Koury — a Pittsburgh native who built this company on the idea that a homeowner should understand exactly what they're buying before anyone climbs on the roof.

Meet the owner

Melissa A. Koury

Melissa is from Pittsburgh and has spent her life here. She graduated from Churchill High School as a member of its last graduating class, then earned a Bachelor of Science in Health and Planning Administration from Penn State.

That background — a field where clear documentation and patient explanation are the whole job — is why Pine Run runs the way it does. Every estimate is itemized, every inspection comes with photographs, and nobody gets a price without being told what is actually wrong with their roof and what will happen if they wait.

As a woman-owned business in a trade that isn't, Melissa hears the same thing from homeowners all the time: they were talked at instead of talked to. Pine Run is built to be the opposite of that.

How we operate

What ownership means here

A small owner-run company can do a few things a franchise can't. These are the ones we hold ourselves to.

You talk to the owner

Melissa is reachable during the job, not just at the sale. No call center, no handoff to a crew you've never met.

The price is the price

Decking replacement is quoted per sheet up front, so a bad deck is not a surprise invoice halfway through the tear-off.

Photographs, always

Inspections come with pictures of what we found. You see the roof the way we saw it, before you decide anything.

Sister company. Pine Run Roofing is affiliated with Forest Knoll Construction, which means two companies' worth of crews, suppliers and manufacturer relationships behind every job — at the scale of a shop where the owner answers the phone.

Free inspection. Written estimate. No pressure.

Same-day callback, Monday through Saturday.
